Rockbox for iRiver works!
Very exciting news for iRiver H120/140 owners – the Rockbox firmware is 75% working! What’s Rockbox, I hear you ask. What’s a firmware. Sigh.
Rockbox is a custom opensource operating system for a variety of popular hard-disk-based mp3 players, including the Archos series. It’s been around a long time, and is in most cases significantly better at what it does than the original software the players came with, and in my mind is better than the iPod firmware. It allows you to plug in new modules with ease to expand its functionality, customise your Now Playing screen, create on the fly playlists, move, rename, delete, play ‘gapless’ (ie – if two CD tracks are designed to move seamlessly one to the other, there’s no silence between them) support a massive range of formats… (and has games and the like, if for some reason you feel the need to play snake on your mp3 player). It’s also very easy to use and boots in about 3 seconds on my player, compared to the 30-60 the latest iRiver proprietary firmware takes!
Have a look at the Rockbox on iRiver wiki site, I’ll post simplified installation instructions in the near future- the ones on this site are obscure to say the least!
A big hand and huge thanks to the team developing Rockbox!
